Information

The British Judo Council

The BJC is the national body that our club is registered with, and the vast majority of our members have personal membership to, we recommend that our members join the BJC. This organisation provides a nationally recognised grading system, courses national competitions etc. you can contact the British Judo Council either through the club, or at its head office address BJC. 1A Horn Lane, Acton, London, W3 9NJ. Or atwww.britishjudocouncil.org

Provisional licence

For insurance reasons everyone has to have a licence before they practice judo, even for their first lesson. Because of this the B.J.C. issues provisional licenses which cover people for three months at club practices. If members wish to enter competitions and contests they will need to get a full license first. The cost of this provisional license is £7 for juniors and adults. Once this has been paid to the club secretary who is a representative of the B.J.C then you can practice on the same day.

The Somerset area BJC

Founded in 1987 and run by the BJC clubs in Somerset it provides area grading’s competitions and local courses. It is run by a committee, which has its AGM around March every year and many of our members have served on this committee. You can contact the committee either through Andrew Jones or The areas technical officer and committee chairman Mr John MacIntyre who can be contacted at, the Maples, 108 Wembdon rd, Bridgwater, Somerset, TA6 7QS. Or at SomersetBJC@hotmail.com

Grading’s

All Judo players have a grade this is denoted by the colour of the player’s belt the darker the colour the more experienced the player. Children under sixteen also have coloured tabs on their belts. These grades are awarded at area grading’s which in Somerset are held twice a year on in February and the other in June. The first few grading’s are based only on theory. After green belt contest ability is also assessed.

Child protection

The Yeovil Judokai has a child protection policy copies of which can be found at the BJC web site mentioned above, or see the club secretary who will be happy to show you a printed copy. Our secretary and our coaches are CRB checked every three years and this is monitored by the BJC.

An important part of this policy is the keeping of accurate records of attendance all members are reminded that they must be booked in by the club secretary before practice.

Photographs

Sometimes parents or members may wish to take photographs of judo, at practice sessions and or events, either for their own use or for publicising the club through the newsletter, web site, or local press.

For the safety of its children members it is the club policy not to identify any child by name, in any photographs used in its newsletters or on its web site.

Parents/guardians have the rights over their Childs image and can request that no photographs are taken of their children while at judo.

If you do not wish photographs to be taken of your children at judo events and practices, please inform the club secretary or one of the coaches.

Parents/guardians do not have to give any reason for a decision not to allow children to be photographed. However if Parents/guardians feel it is in the best interest of the children for us to be informed of the reason, then the matter will be treated in strict confidence.

If you have any questions on these or any aspect of Judo please ask one of the instructors or the club secretary.
