Etiquette

At the Yeovil Judo Kai we expect all members to keep to certain standards of hygiene and behaviour this is for their own safety and for any person who practices with them. The following rules probably do not cover every possible situation, which could occur, but they give a good guide to the kind of behaviour expected to maintain a safe dojo.

Before you come to Judo

1) Finger and toenails must be cut short.

It is easy to cut or scratch people with long nails.

2) Judo players should be clean, particularly hands and feet.

In any sport cuts and grazes can happen good general cleanliness will help avoid infection.

3) Judo suits must be kept clean and in good repair

A clean judo suit will help avoid infection and damaged suit can be dangerous.

4) Female members should wear a white T-shirt under their judo jacket

BJC contest rules say this t-shirt should be white.

5) Players with long hair should have it tied up

If your hair reaches your collar it should be tied up with a hair tie no metal or plastic.

6) Ear rings and jewellery must be removed

For recently pierced ears students can wear studs if they are covered with a plaster.

7) Always arrive on time

At the beginning of the lesson we do our stretching and warm up exercises, which help to avoid aches, and pains of pulled muscles etc, so it could be dangerous as well as rude for you to be late.

8) When you arrive please go to the desk first

It is very important we keep accurate records so please report to the desk even if you pay by the month.

While you are at Judo

9) No talking to people on the mat

If you are not on the mat do not shout or talk to people who are. If you wish

To speak to someone on the mat ask the Sensei first and they will send them

over to you.

10) No running in the Dojo

Unless you are told to by Sensei.

11) No bullying

Always look after lower grades and younger members. It is not good Judo to keep throwing someone again and again just because you can, that is bullying. Good Judo is throw your opponent cleanly and safely once or twice and spend the rest of the time encouraging and coaching them to attack you.

12) No horseplay

Most injuries are a result or messing about.

13) Always wear your zori’s to the edge of the mat

Zori's must be worn while going on and off the mat we must keep our feet and the mat as clean as possible to avoid infection the sports hall floor is not clean.

14) Always ask sensei before leaving the mat

It is important that Sensei knows where people are we don’t want someone going to the bathroom slipping over and not being missed or found until the end of the session.

15) No drinks to be taken on to the mat

A liquid spill on the mat is very dangerous! Please leave the mat completely if you need a drink.

16) Pay attention

Judo is a fast moving sport if you are not watching you will miss sometime or get injured. Pay attention and be safe.
